Innovation in Plastics Recycling

How MAS Drives Innovation?

MAS develops recycling technologies around real material and process challenges. The technology portfolio includes conical co-rotating twin-screw extrusion, continuous melt filtration, high-performance degassing, dry cleaning, material preparation, PET recycling, re-compounding, digital process control and solutions for upgrading existing extrusion lines.

The focus is always on the process: improving material handling, melt quality, filtration, degassing, process stability and the quality of the final recyclate.

How MAS Develops Recycling Technology

Material-Led Engineering

Recycled plastics can vary significantly in bulk density, moisture, contamination, viscosity and thermal sensitivity. That is why MAS starts with the material, the process challenge and the required output quality.

➔

Connected Process Design

Feeding, melting, homogenisation, filtration, degassing and pelletising are considered as connected process steps rather than isolated machines. This allows individual components to work together as one coordinated recycling process.

➔

Testing and Validation

Material trials and laboratory extrusion provide valuable insights into material behaviour and support decisions on machine configuration, filtration, degassing, additives and process conditions before scale-up.

Verified Patented Technologies

MAS identifies the following technologies as patented on its official company and product pages. Patent status should always be presented exactly as approved by MAS and without implying that every product in the portfolio is patent-protected.

How the MAS Vent Extruder Works

The MAS vent extruder is a melt-fed single-screw extruder positioned after upstream extrusion and filtration. It is designed for plastic melts that require additional degassing before pelletising or further processing.

Melt Distribution

The melt-distribution block divides the incoming melt into numerous smaller partial flows, creating a larger and continuously renewed melt surface.

➔

Vacuum Degassing

Three vent openings combined with a matched vacuum system support the removal of moisture, air and volatile components from the melt.

➔

Pressure Build-Up

After degassing, the single-screw extruder builds the pressure required for downstream pelletising, reducing the pressure burden on upstream extrusion and filtration.

MAS offers the TA vent extruder in different sizes for a wide range of recycling applications. The appropriate configuration is selected according to the material, throughput and process requirements.

Research, Testing & Process Validation

Innovation starts with understanding the material. MAS combines process engineering, machine development, material trials and customer collaboration to develop and validate recycling concepts. The MAS Technical Test Center and laboratory equipment allow material behavior and process configurations to be evaluated before full-scale implementation.

Customer materials can be tested to evaluate feeding, melting, filtration, degassing, compounding and pelletizing behavior under defined conditions.

Test results provide valuable information for selecting extruder configurations, filtration, venting, additives, throughput targets and downstream equipment.

Knowledge gained during testing can support the development of industrial machine and line concepts matched to the customer’s production requirements.
