CDF Melt Filtration—Process-Controlled Filtration For Contaminated Plastics

When Is CDF The Right Filtration Route?

Use CDF for a suitable, pumpable polymer melt where solid contaminants must be removed continuously and where the contaminant load, target fineness, pressure window and discharge behaviour fit the selected model and filter-disc configuration.
Do not position CDF as a substitute for sorting, washing/dry cleaning, drying, degassing, deodorisation or polymer separation. Moisture, volatiles, odour, dissolved substances and incompatible polymers require other process stages. Very large, fibrous, deformable, abrasive, reactive or highly variable contaminants require representative assessment.

Adaptive Filtration, New Systems And Retrofits

Conventional melt filters often operate with fixed filtration behaviour, even when contamination levels fluctuate. MAS CDF melt filtration uses PLC control and tracking regulation to adjust key operating parameters as material conditions change — supporting steadier melt pressure, continuous filtration performance and lower melt loss in demanding recycling applications.

The CDF melt filter can be integrated into new MAS recycling systems, where it is installed as standard, or retrofitted into existing extrusion lines. Available designs and filter sizes include the CDF 300 and CDF 500-D. Retrofit projects are particularly relevant where an existing filter is worn, has insufficient capacity or limits melt quality and line performance.

How Adaptive Melt Filtration Works

The CDF melt filter adapts to the material supplied from the extruder and its degree of contamination. Unlike other filters, it operates continuously and can be precisely controlled to the required process point via the PLC — manually or automatically with tracking control.

Constant Melt Pressure

The tear-off pressure on the blades is increased or decreased with the contamination level to maintain constant melt pressure, raising filtered-material quality and reducing waste.

Adaptive Discharge Control

The screw discharge speed adjusts to the contamination of the supplied material via the PLC, and different screw geometries are available for different types and levels of contamination.

Steel Filter Discs, 90–1,000 μm

High-quality steel filter discs offer a filtration fineness of 90 μm to 1,000 μm and a large active surface, ensuring high throughput at low melt pressure and long service life.
