Does My Recyclate Need Re-Compounding?

When Does Re-Compound Fit Better Than Simple Regranulation?

Choose Re-Compound when recycled feedstock needs more than melting and pelletising: fluctuating input must be homogenised, additives or fillers must be incorporated, solid contamination must be filtered, difficult volatiles must be removed, or properties must be corrected before the material returns to production.

A simpler regranulation route may be better when the feedstock is clean and stable, no meaningful property modification is required, filtration and degassing duties are limited, or an existing line can meet the target with a focused upgrade.

Define The Property Target Before Selecting Re-Compounding

Re-compounding is not automatically upcycling. First define the current material, its variability and value, the intended application and the measurable property target. Typical targets may include melt behaviour, tensile or impact performance, stiffness, colour, UV stability, odour, contamination, moisture or volatiles, additive dispersion, pellet quality and downstream process stability.

The Re-Compound concept creates value when the recycled melt can be stabilised and modified in one coordinated line: additives and fillers are mixed in the MAS extruder, solid contaminants are removed by continuous melt filtration, the cascade stage provides intensive degassing and pressure build-up, and the melt is then pelletised for reuse.

How the MAS Re-Compound Line Works

The complete process combines controlled feeding and re-compounding, continuous CDF melt filtration, cascade degassing and pressure build-up, and final pelletising.

Feeding and re-compounding stage

Feed + Re-Compound

Melt, mix and homogenise the recyclate while incorporating suitable additives and fillers.

→

Continuous CDF melt filtration

Continuous Filtration

Remove suitable solid, non-melting contaminants before final degassing and pelletising.

→

Cascade degassing and pressure build-up

Cascade Degas + Pressure

Use the single-screw cascade stage for effective degassing and stable pressure build-up.

→

Re-Compound pelletising and output

Pelletise + Handle

Finish with strand, water-ring or underwater pelletising and transfer to the selected storage system.

Flexible Property Correction and Additive Incorporation

Additives and Fillers During Re-Compounding

Suitable additives and fillers can be incorporated in the conical co-rotating MAS twin-screw extruder while the recycled material is melted and homogenised. Dosing strategy, ingredient form, loading, compatibility and filtration behaviour must be validated for the specific formulation.

Colour, UV and Quality Correction

Colourants, UV stabilisers and other compatible modifiers can be used to compensate for changing input quality and move the recyclate toward a defined application target. The required correction should be based on measured input and output properties rather than a fixed recipe.

Homogenising Fluctuating Recycling Fractions

The Re-Compound layout is designed to balance fluctuating recycling fractions through controlled mixing, filtration and degassing. The achievable operating window depends on polymer compatibility, contamination, viscosity, moisture, volatile load, additive package and final quality specification.

What Our Customers Say

The conical shape is very advantageous when melting the material, where with little shear and very short dwell time, the material is damaged as little as possible.

Arjan Van Kempen, CEO – Cumapol, Netherlands

We always have to try to buy as good as possible to produce top-quality regranulate. And we do that with the technology we bought from MAS.
