Is A Conical Twin-Screw Extruder The Right Route For My Material?
Start with the polymer or blend, its source and variability, material form and bulk density, moisture and volatiles, contamination, and additives, fillers or fibers. Then define the current process, mixing and degassing needs, filtration, required throughput, target application, available utilities and lifecycle economics.
Proven MAS innovation, now deployed more than 300 times worldwide, generating high-quality material for the recycling cycle.
When Does The MAS Conical Twin-Screw Design Fit?
Consider MAS when representative trials show that the material needs reliable intake of low or variable bulk-density feed, controlled melting and mixing, degassing, additive incorporation or a compact integration concept.

What the Conical Geometry Changes
The conical co-rotating design combines a large intake zone with changing screw diameter and process volume—creating tailored conditions from feeding to discharge.
Key advantages: reliable intake of low-bulk-density materials, controlled melting and homogenisation, effective degassing through continuous surface renewal, compact design and application-specific screw configurations.
Performance depends on the material, process setup and operating conditions and should be validated for each application.
How the MAS Twin-Screw Extruder Works
The patented conical co-rotating process unit combines efficient material intake, gentle melting, strong homogenisation and reliable degassing in one compact extrusion process.

Large-volume feeding
Accept and meter the real input consistently.
➔

Gentle Melting
Control shear, temperature and residence time.
➔

Efficient Degassing
Expose melt surface and remove relevant volatiles.
➔

Homogeneous Output
Filter and pelletise to the agreed quality target.
The Twin-Screw Extruder in Action
The MAS extrusion system processes different plastics fractions — materials of the lowest bulk density, mill materials, flakes, new products and fibers. Additives, filling materials and fibers can be added directly through the feed opening, without complicated, high-maintenance side dosing.
- Joint recycling and compounding of several products, such as LLDPE with LDPE or sheets with mill materials
- Higher-quality granulation of sheets compared with conventional extruders
- Complete removal of material inclusions such as glue on sheets for maximum product purity
- Considerably higher recycling ratio and better quality possible for PET
Key Advantages at a Glance

Large Feed Volume
Considerably larger feed volume than conventional screw extruders.

Strong Feed
No material back-up thanks to the conical design.

High Throughput
High specific throughput even at low screw speed.

Strong Degassing
Better granulate with significantly fewer gas inclusions, including heavily printed or metallised films.

Compounding
Excellent homogenisation and compounding properties.

Low Viscosity Stress
Low shear velocity and low melting temperature.

Air Cooling
The short, conical process unit only requires air cooling of the cylinder in the discharge area.

Retrofittable
Smooth component replacement and easy upgrade, for example into a compound or upgrade system.

Space-Saving
Very short overall length at large output.

Low Maintenance
Considerably less wear and tear and easier maintenance.
Low-Maintenance Design and Retrofitting
The conical construction allows generously dimensioned screw bearings and a massive screw construction while keeping machine dimensions compact. Flexible conversions of existing systems are possible without any loss of quality or functionality.
The extruder stands out for comparatively low wear and easy maintenance. MAS screws consist of several elements that can be replaced individually, so the system keeps state-of-the-art technology even after repairs and replacements thanks to ongoing, certified development.
What Our Customers Say
The conical shape is very advantageous when melting the material, where with little shear and very short dwell time, the material is damaged as little as possible.
